Marking its first participation in the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) PeerKada Facilitator Training, the Campus Student Council (CSC) of Cagayan State University (CSU) Lal-lo, through Student Council President Renier Castillo, joined the national initiative, leading to discussions on the possible establishment of a PeerKada program across the university.

Spearheaded by CHED in partnership with the UNILAB Foundation and Heads Up PH, the PeerKada: Building Healthy Connections, Nurturing Inclusive and Supportive Spaces Program gathered student leaders and youth advocates from across the country to strengthen peer facilitation skills, promote mental health awareness, and foster a culture of care, inclusion, and meaningful student engagement during the two-day training held on June 24–25 at the 456 Hotel Legarda in Baguio City.

Following the seminar, Castillo said discussions have begun with the Office of Student Welfare and Development, the student regent, university officials, and fellow student leaders to explore the possible establishment of a PeerKada program.

“Our initial plan is to establish a PeerKada program within the university by first crafting its Constitution and By-Laws and working closely with different university offices and stakeholders,” Castillo said.

He shared that the experience strengthened his understanding of compassionate leadership and highlighted the role of student leaders.

“The seminar reminded me that our role is not to provide all the answers but to help students find the right support and resources they need...that genuine leadership begins with listening, understanding, and caring for others,” he added.

The campus’ participation in the national training reflects its continuing efforts to strengthen student leadership and advance initiatives that promote mental health awareness, peer support, and inclusive engagement across the university community.
